Hoh Jun Gi
Triumphed over Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID)

Jun Gi is also SCBB's first cord blood recipient.

Jun Gi was diagnosed with SCID when he was 5 months old. People who suffer from SCID (better known as “Bubble Boy Disease”) are unable to fight off common colds and infections. It is a serious immune deficiency which is fatal if left untreated. A Haematopoietic (blood-forming) Stem Cell Transplant was Jun Gi’s only hope to survive his disease.

Unfortunately, Jun Gi is an only child with no siblings who could potentially provide him with a stem cell match. Therefore, he had to rely on unrelated donors to provide the haematopoietic stem cells required for his life-saving transplant.

Unable to find a matched bone marrow or peripheral blood donor, Jun Gi’s last hope was to locate a suitable cord blood unit. After 4 months of searching, a cord blood match was found for Jun Gi in the SCBB's public inventory. In 2006, Jun Gi’s life was restored and changed forever after he received a life-saving cord blood transplant.

Jun Gi is now a happy child that enjoys science in school. His parents, Hoh Kim Youn and Jane Leong, are grateful for the new lease of life that their only child has received, thanks to a generous cord blood donor.
